SYNOPSIS
“Turn your head around and think how can you make it happen! Do nothing else but
that! Make it happen!” is Robert Wilson’s lifelong motto. His hands shake as he
stands at the precipice of his greatest challenge to date: the completion of The Watermill
Center, his monument. But this task is unlike any work of the stage that has come
before him. Only two weeks left to prepare the grand opening after nearly a quarter of
a century of fundraising and construction. With handful of artists as his crew and time/
money fleeting, can he achieve his capstone accomplishment while simultaneously creating
stage productions that have brought him to this point?

« Regardez autour de vous et réfléchissez au moyen d’y arriver! Ne faites rien d’autre que ça! Arrangez vous pour réussir, Make it happen! »  est la devise de toujours de Robert Wilson. Au bord du gouffre ses mains tremblent au moment de réaliser son plus grand défi à ce jour: la réalisation du Watermill Center, son monument.
Mais cette tâche ne ressemble à aucun autre travail de la scène qu’il ait accompli à ce jour. Il ne lui reste que deux semaines pour préparer la grande ouverture du Watermill center après près d’un quart de siècle de collecte de fonds et de construction. Avec une poignée d’artistes comme équipe, le temps et l’argent qui manquent, peut-il accomplir ce qui représente l’oeuvre de sa vie tout en créant simultanément les
productions théâtrales qui l’ont amené à ce point?

THE ADVENTURE

The road to “The Watermill Center” begins in 1960 when Robert Wilson left his hometown
of Waco, Texas for New York City and formed “The Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds,”
a ragtag group of artists, teachers, children, elderly and entrepreneurs that met and created
some of the 20th century’s most impressive works for the stage and performance
arts. After rising to fame, Wilson had to relinquish the less formal arts group and embarked
on an international stage career that created such works as “The Black Rider,”
“The Civil Wars” and the opera that started it all,“Einstein on the Beach.”

La route du  “Watermill Center” a commencé en 1960, lorsque Robert Wilson a quitté sa ville natale de Waco, au Texas, pour New York et a formé “L’école Byrd Hoffman” un groupe hétéroclite d’artistes, enseignants, enfants, personnes âgées et entrepreneurs qui se regroupèrent et créerent quelques-unes des œuvres les plus impressionnantes du 20ème siècle de la scène et la performance. Après avoir atteint la gloire, Wilson dû abandonner le groupe artistique moins formel et embarqua vers une carrière internationale qui créa des œuvres telles que “The Black Rider””The Civil Wars” et l’opéra qui a démarra cette aventure: “Einstein on the Beach. »

But after more than a decade of living out of a suitcase, Wilson looks back on his special
laboratory that was the “Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds” and decides to return to his
roots. Seeing potential in an aging science laboratory long abandoned and condemned
in Long Island, Robert Wilson and his team of artists set out to build their own laboratory
for the arts: The Watermill Center. It’s a small group of less than twenty dancers, actors
and designers that quickly swells to over a hundred artists, teachers, children, elderly
and yes, entrepreneurs but this time from all over the world who come to help realize
not only Robert Wilson’s dream but their own in the United States.

Mais après plus d’une décennie à voyager, Wilson revient sur son idée du laboratoire qu’était la «Byrd Hoffman School de Byrds” et décide de retourner à ses racines. Découvrant le potentiel d’un ancien bâtiment abandonné et condamné à Long Island, Robert Wilson et son équipe d’artistes s’y installent pour construire leur propre laboratoire pour les arts: Le Watermill Center. C’est un petit groupe de moins de vingt danseurs, acteurs et designers qui enflent rapidement à plus d’une centaine d’artistes, enseignants, enfants, personnes âgées et aussi entrepreneurs, mais cette fois-ci en provenance du monde entier qui accourent pour l’aider à réaliser non seulement le rêve de Robert Wilson, mais leur propre rêve aux États-Unis.

With newly restored archival footage, in depth rehearsal footage and original high
definition footage of never before filmed workshops and meetings, the film follows
the story of not only the world wide superstar that is Robert Wilson but also the triumphs
and set backs of building the center. Along the way we encounter the
artists that have influenced Wilson’s oeuvre such as Lucinda Childs, Christopher
Knowles, the artists in residence like Cao Fei, Wei Hai Min, as well as the experts
who give insight on his vision including Pierre Bergé, Lisa Dennison, Simon de
Pury, Irving Benson…

Avec des images d’archives récemment restaurées, de répétitions, d’ateliers et de réunions actuelles en HD, le film suit l’histoire de Robert Wilson, mais aussi les triomphes et difficultés de la construction du centre. En chemin, nous rencontrons les artistes qui ont influencé l’œuvre de Wilson tels que Lucinda Childs, Christopher Knowles, les artistes en résidence comme Cao Fei, Wei Hai Min, ainsi que les experts qui donnent un aperçu de sa vision, y compris Pierre Bergé, Lisa Dennison, Simon de Pury, Irving Benson …
